Liberation Community's Spam Proofing

When email addresses or addresses are listed on the Liberation Community website, they are shown as .JPG pictures of the text of the email address or mailing address. This is done to protect those addresses and especially those email addresses from being spammed.

How does it work?

There are computers that are programmed to act as "Web Crawlers" These computers search the web, visiting every single page and document on every single website on the World-Wide-Web. Some of these web crawlers are beneficial, such as those used by the search engines to help us find the web pages we are looking for. Unfortunately, spammers also use web crawlers looking for any valid email address that they can find so that they can create lists of valid email addresses to which spam can be sent. HTML files are text files, and it is easy for a computer to search these text files looking for a character pattern that looks like this  " xxx@xxx.xxx " where "xxx" can be any number of valid email address characters. The computer can then test the part after the '@' to see if it is a valid domain, and if so, it can send a test email to the email address, and if it is not returned as undeliverable, the validated email address will start receiving hundreds of spam emails. Creating .JPG pictures of the text of an email address effectively hides the email address from these web crawling computers while still allowing human visitors to view and read the email addresses. When you see an email address such as you will find that you cannot highlight the email address and copy it as text since it is a picture. Humans can read these addresses, but computers cannot. Spammers simply cannot afford to hire humans to search the web looking for JPG files containing email addresses and then typing these addresses out.
